Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, two songwriters from the Muscle Shoals area of Alabama are finally getting their due with this disc of their songs, though there is little doubt that this is just a small scratch on the surface of their work.

Emerging from the Muscle Shoals music scene of the s, Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham wrote an incredible number of Southern soul, pop, and rock classics, most of them in the span of a couple years, and since they generally weren’t the ones cutting these gems in the studio, it’s sometimes difficult to grasp just how good and varied this songwriting team’s talents actually were.8/

About Cry Like a Baby "Cry Like a Baby" is a song written by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, and performed by The Box Tops. The song reached #2 in April on the Billboard Hot chart, a position which it held for two weeks. It was kept out of the top spot by Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey", which stayed at #1 for five weeks.

Spooner: Well, they could. I remember Dan Penn telling me a few years ago, "These young songwriters around Nashville" - where he lives now - "always ask me how I write a song." He says, "I tell 'em to make something up." (laughs) But there's different perceptions on how to write a song. Yeah, one person may write from experience, which is good.

This set of albums gets 4 "stars" for the great performances and also for the fine songs, many written by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham among others on all four albums. Some of the later album's songs are close to being "filler" but are still enjoyable for fans (like me) of TBT, so somewhere between 3 and 4 "stars" is for many people a good /5(22).
